How to Adopt

Interested in adopting? Our goal is to always find a good match for both the pet and the adopter. This results in matches that are significantly more likely to succeed for both your household and the animal you are adopting.

Please visit our available animals’ pages to see the list of our adoptable animals. This page is in real time through a direct link with our shelter database so check back often.  Keep in mind that you may see an animal listed that is already in the adoption process, so please have a few possible options if the animal you have chosen is no longer available at the time of your visit. We try to update the website to include a description of each pet, but if you have any questions, we encourage you to email us or give us a call. We recommend that you fill out an online application prior to visiting us during our normal business hours. After you have completed the application, weencourage you to call us to make an appointment. If you just stop by to visit us during our adoption hours, we will do our best to accommodate you but may ask you to wait in the lobby or set you up for a later time or date.

All potential adopters sign in when getting to our facility:

  • Dog meetings take place outdoors, with an Adoption Counselor bringing the dog out to meet you. Time is spent reviewing the dog’s profile, including behavioral and medical information, and determining if it is the right fit for the pet and the family. We do not allow the public to free walk in the kennels.
  • Cat adopters will check in at the front desk and be shown our different cat areas to free roam. If you are interested in adopting anyone, you may come to the desk to get a staff member who can go over with you the adoption process.

Note, if a pet already has an adoption appointment reserved, you may not be able to view him/her. Adoptions are processed every business day, appointments take priority then on first come, first served with approved application.

Adoption is nearly always the better financial choice when compared to purchasing from a store or breeder. In addition to being a good financial choice, our goal is to always find a good match for both the pet and the adopter. This results in matches that are significantly more likely to succeed for both your household and the animal.

In order to help you find the most appropriate pet for your household, we ask that you:

  1. Complete a short survey about your home and lifestyle.
  2. Bring by as all members of your family as possible to meet the pet. We require that ALL members of the household meet the pet.
  3. If you have another dog, we require a Meet & Greet.
  4. Bring Your Landlord’s Number! We will call for approval.

It’s important that your new pet is compatible with all the people and pets in your house; we do our best to determine the adoptable pet’s ability to adjust to your lifestyle. We evaluate each adoption on a case-by-case basis and may ask you to visit us several times to meet with the dog or cat prior to completing the adoption.

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT ADOPTION

  • There’s something wrong with the animal.
    • FALSE. All adoptable pets undergo medical examination and are evaluated to match your lifestyle.
  • They’re all old cats and dogs; there aren’t any cute puppies and kittens.
    • FALSE. Adoptable pets of various ages are available; we frequently have kittens and puppies available. However, they’re very popular and usually get adopted very quickly.
  • The store or breeder has a larger variety.
    • FALSE. Stores and breeders may have more pets, but they’re usually limited to only a few specific breeds. Adoption opens up your options to breeds and mixes not available for purchase. In addition, through our collaboration with other agencies and groups we can find the perfect pet for you.
