How to Adopt

Interested in Adopting?

We are dedicated to making sure every adoption is the right fit for both the pet and the adopter. Our goal is to create successful, lasting relationships between pets and their new families.

To view the animals available for adoption, please visit our live listing of adoptable pets. This page is updated in real-time through our shelter database, so be sure to check back often! Keep in mind that sometimes a pet may already be in the adoption process, so we recommend having a few backup options in mind just in case your first choice is no longer available. We do our best to provide detailed descriptions for each pet, but if you have questions, don’t hesitate to email or call us.

Before Visiting: We recommend filling out an online application before stopping by during our regular business hours. If you arrive during adoption hours without an appointment, we’ll do our best to assist you, though we may ask you to wait in our lobby or schedule a time for a later visit.

Visiting Our Shelter: When you arrive, all adopters will check in at the front desk.

  • Dog Meetings: Meetings with dogs take place outdoors, where an Adoption Counselor will bring the dog out to meet you. You’ll have time to discuss the dog’s profile, including behavioral and medical details, to ensure it’s a good match for your family. To minimize stress in our dog kennels, we don’t allow the public to walk through the kennels.
  • Cat Meetings: Cat adopters will check in at the front desk and be shown our various cat areas, where you can meet the cats in a relaxed, free-roaming environment. If you’re interested in adopting, a staff member will assist you and walk you through the adoption process.

Please note, if a pet has an adoption appointment scheduled, you may not be able to meet that pet during your visit. We process adoptions every business day, and appointments take priority, followed by first-come, first-served adoptions for those with approved applications.

To help us match you with the right pet, we ask that you:

  • Complete a brief survey about your home and lifestyle.
  • Provide your landlord’s contact information so we can obtain approval.
  • Bring as many family members as possible to meet the pet.
  • If you have another dog, we require a Meet & Greet to ensure compatibility.

It’s crucial that your new pet is a good fit for everyone in your household, including other pets. We work closely with adopters to evaluate how well a pet might adjust to your lifestyle. Each adoption is considered on a case-by-case basis, and we may ask you to visit a few times to get to know the pet before finalizing the adoption.

If you have any questions about our adoptable pets, please feel free to email our Adoption Counselors at: info@syvhumane.org.

We’re excited to help you find your new best friend!
