Volunteer
The Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society continues to rely on the kind of volunteer dedication and support that were the hallmark of it early years.
Canine Coach
Assist with dog care including cleaning and tidying dog areas, washing and folding animal bedding, cleaning dishes and toys, feeding, exercising, socializing, training and grooming dogs to enrich their lives while at the shelter and help them become more desirable companions.
Training Required:
Level 1 – One-hour orientation and Open Paw introduction
Level 2 – Level 1 training plus one-hour Open Paw basics
Level 3 – Level 1 & 2 training plus 6 months of volunteer service and certification of Open Paw dog handling proficiency by the Volunteer Manager. Level 3 volunteers are able to take approved dogs off-site for socialization and training.
Cat Steward
Assist with cat care including cleaning and tidying cat areas, washing and folding animal bedding, cleaning dishes, toys and litterpans, feeding, socializing, training and grooming cats to enrich their lives while at the shelter and help them become more desirable companions.
Training Required: One-hour orientation and introduction to cat handling and care.
Pet-Assisted Senior Visitation
Make a difference in the lives of animals and people by bringing homeless animals to assisted-living homes, rehabilitation centers or other “people care” facilities.
Training Required: ½-hour orientation and two-hour training/shadowing.
Public Relations & Community Outreach
Assist at fundraising events, represent the SYV Humane Society at community events, and provide support for mailings, and other miscellaneous projects.
Training Required: ½-hour orientation, training is event/task specific.
Thrift Shop Assistant
Assist with sorting, marking and selling household goods and clothing at the House of Treasure Thrift Shop. All shop proceeds support the shelter's adoption and spay/neuter programs.
The House of Treasures Thrift Shop is entirely volunteer run. The Shop provides much needed support for shelter operations, covering approximately 25% of our yearly expenses.
Guidelines
Volunteers must be at least 12 years old to volunteer with a parent or guardian as a Volunteer Partner. We realize the many children in our community are eager to help homeless animals, however, children under 12 are the most likely age group to be bitten or injured by dogs or cats.
Volunteers must commit to service of 4 hours per month for a minimum of six months.
